Saltburn-by-the-Sea

RedGables is set in the small Victorian coastal resport of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. A purpose built Victorian resort it has a wealth of architectural gems, including RedGables which is Grade II listed.

Set upon on a substantial ridge, overlooking the North East Coast with views of the spectacular Huntley Cliff, it sits at the end of a long golden sands beach that stretches all the way to the Tees Estuary. It is noted for having the only remaining pier on the North East Coast.

The Victorian formal and landscaped gardens were designed in the 1880s to provide a place for people to prominade and take the air. In typical Victorian style it is made up of a number of formal prominades complimented by a tamed landscape dotted with follys and faux ruins.

Whitby is approximately thirty minutes (19 Miles) drive from Saltburn along the stunning North Yorkshire Moors Road.

Sights

Saltburn Pier & Tramway

Is the last remaining pier on the North East Coast, having survived innumerable boat strikes over the years. The Ovenberg wreck of 1924 shortened the pier to it's current length, see a before and after picture here.

The pier is reached from the cliff by means of the world's 2nd oldest water-powered cliff lift, the Saltburn Tramway, finished in 1884.

Natural World

Cleveland Way reaches the coast at Saltburn, you can choose to head inland across the North Yorkshire Moors National Park towards the traditional market town of Helmsley or down the coast through the traditional villages and ports of the North Yorkshire Coast passing through Runswick Bay to Whitby to the traditional resort seaside resort of Scarborough ending in Filey.
